Mix Tape Friday: Kizza Me

It’s hot outside. Steamy. The blood is boiling and clothes are sliding off. So, of course, my mind’s on kissing right now. Celebrate the smooch with these great songs.

Prince: Kiss

The B-52’s: Whammy Kiss

The Pipettes: Your Kisses Are Wasted on Me

The Replacements: Kiss Me on the Bus

Frank Black: My Favorite Kiss

Bryan Ferry: Kiss and Tell

Ben Harper: Steal My Kisses

Big Star: Kizza Me

Jonathan Richman: When She Kisses Me

Mary Chapin Carpenter: Passionate Kisses

Amy Rigby: Beer and Kisses

Spacehog feat. Michael Stipe: Almond Kisses

Siouxsie & The Banshees: Kiss Them for Me

The Shins: Kissing the Lipless

Magnetic Fields: Kiss Me Like You Mean It

Lucinda Williams: Still I Long for Your Kiss

New Order: The Perfect Kiss

Joan Armatrading: When You Kisses Me

Holly Golightly: One Kiss

Badly Drawn Boy: Without a Kiss

Van Morrison: Give Me a Kiss

Johnny Thunders: Great Big Kiss

Ray Charles: Kiss Me Baby

Rosebuds: Wishes for Kisses

Sam Phillips: Love and Kisses/Signposts

Jill Sobule + Warren Zevon: I Kissed a Girl

Tom Jones feat. Art of Noise: Kiss

The Weekly R.E.M. E-scavenger Hunt: Michael Stipe’s on this mix tape with Spacehog. Peter Buck’s here, too — but on which track?

I really wanted to include Cher’s cover of “The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s in His Kiss)” — but sadly, I don’t own it. So I ask you, dear readers: Where do you do your online MP3 shopping? I use eMusic for my indie discoveries, but it doesn’t have an extensive catalog. I’d love to find a reputable site that doesn’t sell proprietary file types, as iTunes and Rhapsody and Napster have. Any suggestions?

Another great mix tape, Beth.

How about another version of 'Kiss" in the middle of the list - Age of Chance? Just to make sure everyone's awake!

I'm reminded of a Yoko Ono tune called "Kiss Me Love" (I think). When I was a kid, my mother warned me to not listen to it because Yoko says, "Kiss, kiss, kiss... kiss me love." And, my mother figured that "kiss kiss kiss" backwards is "six six six" -- which is of course the "mark of the beast."

Anyway, I guess I'm old-school, but I never buy MP3s. I prefer to buy CDs and rip my own MP3s.

Ooooh all this kissy kiss - my lips are on permanent pucker!

I'm with Blowing Shit Up, I buy cds as well. I just can't do without the liner notes and you never know when you are going to find that fabulous buried song which you would otherwise never hear. Sorry I can't help out there,

Of course I shamelessly accept mp3s from friends!

What about dear Echo and his Bunnymen?

Oh, and what about that country singer, can't remember her name, but lyrics are "this kiss, this kiss, it's criminal...."

i haven't even heard of some of the artists, but if my big sis beth loves them, then i know they must be great!

Great collection. Love that New Order song.

Hmmmm...I should make MTG a copy of this list. Your lists just get better and better. Oh and I guess you mean how to get mp3's legally right? Right? Cause there are those russian sites...just kidding. I actually buy most of the CD's and Vinyl too at the record shop so I usually rip my own stuff. And for some reason I really want to hear "Roam" by the B-52's now. I wonder if they are on itunes? I shall have to check.

Oh and to Coaster Punchman, that's Faith Hill that sings that song.

Yeah, I want to go make out with Joe now.

There is a guy at the local dive bar who sings Prince's "Kiss" at karaoke and it is truly a sight to see: lots of pelvic thrusting, lots of falsetto. He also usually wears a t-shirt that says something like "I (Heart) Soccer Moms". I gotta get me a video camera so I can post this guy on YouTube.

I love that you put Jonathan Richman on here! I have seen him twice: the first time was on my birthday & it was a blind date; my date was producing the show. Wasn't interested at all in the date but I did fall in love with Jonathan. And then you follow up Mr. Richman with a lady from my old stomping grounds, Mary Chapin Carpenter! She is a living legend in Takoma Park, MD. I knew a guy that lived in her old apartment and he just loved to say, "Yeah, I got Mary's junk mail today."

I was going to ask you about MP3 resources, actually. I've been ripping my own...and, um, finding alternate resources [looks around].

I made up for your New York Dolls omission ("Looking for a Kiss")by having it come up on my random iPod list.

But you have Johnny Thunders, which is pretty close.

And you have Siouxsie and the Banshees whom my wife loves and I simply do not "get."

She was kinda goth before we met.

Beth,

If you wanna hear a great obscure Lucinda W. track, check out her on the Tribute to Mississippi John Hurt doing her rendition of "The Angels Laid Him Away". My main man Peter Case produced this album and it's ALL good. Beck does "Sliding Delta". Most awesome. If you're interested, Peter Case will be playing Eddie's Attic in Sept. 2nd.

Another hot mix. I was trying hard to figure out Peter Buck ... but just couldn't. Guess my R.E.M. knowledge has fallen off since my schoolboy days.

Lita Ford should have made this mix purely as a WTF moment.

I download all my music via Limewire and BitTorrent. If you can't find an MP3 download of a song, there is a program called Audio Hijack that will record streaming audio and convert it to mp3 format. I use it all the time so that i can listen to my favorite NPR shows on my iPod.

Ohhhhh, Prince. That's one of the greatest songs ever.

I guess it's not the time of the season for "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus." What about "I Saw BeckEye Kissing Glenn Tilbrook?" If only...

Beth, I love that Mary Chapin Carpenter song. I'd forgotten all about it until just now. And Prince, well...I don't think I need to say how fantastic he is.

Very lovely mix. If I could just put in a plug for a golden oldie, "Then He Kissed Me" by the Crystals is quite a lovely song.

As far as MP3's, Oink's Pink Palace is the best place ever ever ever for music. At least that's what I hear.

There was just a story in the news about a service that was going to stop using copy protection on their mp3, but I forget what it was. I'm no help. :(

Yet another great mix! "Kiss and Tell" by Bryan Ferry is one of my favorites.

I had never heard Big Star's version of "Kizza Me", thanks for sharing. The one I have is Alex Chilton's solo version that's on "19 Years: A Collection of Alex Chilton".

JOHN: Thanks, sir! Good suggestion for Age of Chance. I almost included that one (and I’m listening to it as I type this) — as well as a John Wesley Harding live cover of the song — but I had too many and had to cut them. Maybe Kizza Me: Part 2 is necessary?

BLOWING SH*T UP WITH GAS: That Yoko tune made it through the third Kizza Me round; not sure why I cut it. And now, knowing I’d scare you, I wish I had. I’m running out of CD room, so these days I buy just those I know I can’t live without.

BARBARA: My problem with CD liner notes is … I can’t read four-point type. I miss albums covers.

COASTER PUNCHMAN: “Lips Like Sugar” made it through the first two rounds, until I decided to go with songs that had “kiss” in the title. I’m such a nerd. But I love kissing.

BARISTA BRAT: Thank you, favorite girl! Come back and let me know which songs you like.

JACY: I love New Order. “Bizarre Love Triangle” should be my life’s theme song.

ARTFUL DODGER: I’ve used the Russian sites (using a new one right now, in fact). Let me know if MTG likes this week’s mix tape.

MOXIE: Isn’t Jonathan Richman the coolest? And Mary Chapin Carpenter, too. The first Kizza Me round had Lucinda singing “Passionate Kisses” (I’m a sucker for the original singer/songwriter) … but MCC’s cover holds a special place in my heart, so I ran with the other Lucinda track.

GRANT MILLER: “Looking for a Kiss” made it to the third round, but I thought it was too similar to the Johnny Thunders tune, and I was in a JT mood this week. Glad you picked up my slack. And good to know you went for a goth, because your girls need to understand the brilliance of Siouxie.

TONY ALVA: I have that! I try to keep current on my Lucinda tunes. She breaks my heart … in a good way. Didn’t know about the Peter Case show; I’ll be there! Skate your board over my way if you see me there. Did you see that John Wesley Harding will be at Eddie’s Attic the night before, as part of the Decatur Book Festival?

WONDERTURTLE: I don’t know that song; something to look forward to in the MP3 hunt!

NEW AND USED RECORDS: In all things Peter Buck, I’ll never leave my schoolboy days. He’s playing guitar on the Sam Phillips track.

THIRD WORST POET: As Mr. Big would say, abso-f*cking-lutely. I had The Great 2007 Makeout in the first quarter of this year … and now I’m missing it.

MICHAEL K: Lita’s on the list for Kizza Me: Part 2. She would have been great on this mix, wouldn’t she? I’ll have to check out Audio Hijack. I used to Limewire things, but my PC ended up infected like a whore during Fleet Week.

BECKEYE: Prince has so many greatest songs ever. I have to admit, though, that I love Tom Jones’ version as much as Prince’s original. I asked the question about MP3 sites because I couldn’t find “I Saw BeckEye Kissing Glenn Tilbrook” anywhere … dammit. Maybe you and I could B-52 it?

CHELENE: “Passionate Kisses” is one of the most fun songs to sing at the top of your lungs. And “Kiss” is one of the most songs for chair-dancing at the office.

SPLOTCHY: That was in the early rounds, as was the original “Shoop Shoop Song (It’s in His Kiss).” Don’t you have to be invited to Oink’s?

DIESEL: Maybe Google can help me find out which one it is. (Glad you stopped by, BTW!)

MALCOLM: I almost went with Alex’s solo version, but I’m trying to get Big Star out there for the young kids.

CP: Faith Hill (married to Tim McGraw, I think) sings "This Kiss"; I've got the CD if you want it.

Beth: Damn girl, you respond to everyone. Bravo!

Beth

Thanks for the comment on the iMac. All this kissing has me thinking of more and more songs. Great mix this Friday!

Let's Just Kiss- Harry Connick Jr.
Kiss Me In the Rain - Barbara Streisand
This Kiss - Faith Hill
Kiss On My List - Hall & Oates
Kiss Me - Sixpence None the Richer

All great, but I must admit at my age 40 something it all sounds good. One bonus about age, it gives you a wide appreciation for music - it is all great!

Thanks

Honestly, you have no idea how much I am learning from these posts. I imagine they take you a while to put together too, eh? I just went back and visited last weeks and picked up a few that I had rough copies of, so thank-you.

Oh, and I just noticed you're seeing Andrew Bird soon, I love him, didn't love his latest as much as his previous but I think he'd be great to see live.

What an awesome list! Great choice after great choice.

I am a bit surprised you didn't have "Kiss Off" by the Violent Femmes, although it's not really a sexy kissing song.

EEBIE: I take my blogging duties seriously.

BLUE EYES: Some good ones to keep in mind in case I do Kizza Me: Part 2.

ALLISON: It takes a while to put together each Mix Tape post, but it's a helluva lot of fun for me. I'm quite excited about the Andrew Bird show; I've never seen him live.

BUBS: I was going for the more romantic, not the kiss-off. But that is a great song.

KEITH KENNEDY: Not as romantic as I was going for, either.

CHANCELUCKY: I had a couple of Ellas on the original list, but decided to stick with songs that had "kiss" in the title. It was too hard to narrow it down otherwise!

and an old song---kisses sweeter than wine? Maybe that was the refrain.

We shouldn't forget Shirley Bassey's "Kiss Me, Honey, Honey, Kiss Me" - hard not to pucker up when Shirley gets demanding!

There's also the almost unlistenable Stephen 'Tin Tin' Duffy "classic" - "Kiss Me (With Your Mouth)" - I know there's a biblical reference in that title, but there's something very unromantic about those three little bracketed words.
