Easy as 1-2-3
There’s another great Green Monkey Music Project over at Splotchy’s place. I got to play this time — and I earned my GMMP Master Badge badge in the process. If only I could get that Making a Fire badge, too …This mix is a fun, elementary one: alphabetical tracks. Herr Splotch asked the contestants to pick a geometric to get our ABCs.
I wound up with Z — last, but certainly not least. I whined at first (how many songs beginning with Z can you think of?), but in minutes I had thirteen tracks. I decided not to take the easy “Ziggy Stardust” route (although my Wilco and Bauhaus covers are pretty cool, and one can never go wrong with Bowie).
I narrowed it down to what I think are five cool Z tunes:
- R.E.M.: Zither
- Brooklyn Funk Essentials: Zurna Preserve
- Guided by Voices: Zap
- Stan Getz feat. Astrud Gilberto: Zazueira
- Young Marble Giants: Zebra Trucks

If I had read Splotchy’s e-mail more closely, I would have known I was on the hook for just one track — but who could cut any of these beautz?

Great tracks and bravo for digging a bit rather than go for the slam dunk that is Ziggy Stardust.

Impressive. Now I'm thinking about the soundtracks to Zentropa and Zorba the Greek and, of course, Z ;)

This reminds me — saw "Into the Wild" last night and suspect you'd love the soundtrack about as much as I did. I'll definitely be adding it to my collection.
A cursory review of my iTunes shows taht I've a got a shitload of albums that start with Z but very few songs. I would be hard pressed to come up with a decent Z mix tape.

David Bowie is the Alice Cooper of the 70s, assuming Alice Cooper was the 60s: probably tough and relevant during their era, but completely unjustifiable if you didn't live through that time.
I'd take the L train to Brooklyn to see the Brooklyn Funk Essentials do that tune!
