Mix Tape Thursday: Love + Happiness
It’s Valentine’s Day — the one day of the year you’re allowed to indulge in your crushes and flirt with abandon. (Okay, some of us live that way every day — but this is the day for you shy kids.)
Today’s mix tape has two sides (you’re welcome, Anandamide). Side A is the Love side — those songs that make you swoon over romantic lyrics, make you want to fall madly in love, leave you aching for long, deep kisses. Side B is the Happiness side — because what makes us happier than the sexy side of love? These are the songs that make me wanna … well, you know ... the songs that send those delicious shivers between my shoulder blades.
Disclaimer:> You may scratch your head over some selections — but there are personal reasons behind them, so quit scratching and start enjoying.
Some sleazebag bloggers have been stealing my MP3 URLs and publishing them on other sites without permission — which is eating up the download bandwidth for you — so this week I’m linking just A-side and B-side zip files. Don’t you hate slimy weenies who ruin it for the rest of us?
Spending a week listening to songs about love has left me in a romantic tizzy. I’ve been swooning and swaying all week, my hand dramatically pressed against my forehead as if I’m in a Douglas Sirk flick — in Technicolor, of course. Listening to Side B has left me in a whole different type of tizzy.

I could pontificate for paragraphs about these seventy songs — but it’s Valentine’s Day. Do you really want to read? No, you don’t. You want to download these tasty little tunes and get on with your seductions. Go. Have fun. Wear sexy panties. Make me proud.
And come back tomorrow to let me know if the mix tape helped you score.
Thanks to HollyC and RCofCHS, Filegod and The Bastard, Renae and Simeon, The Northwest Doppelganger and the Sister, Scrivener and The Occasionally Beloved Engineer for their lovely suggestions.

Yeah, um, I'll have to find another way to make you proud.
Much love,
Anonymous Bastard
I have similar mix tapes. For some reason, the one song that makes me, uh, "happy," is "Burnin' Sky" by Bad Company. Nothing like a song about a prison break to get you in the mood, eh? I attribute it mostly to Paul Rodgers' amazing voice. He could sing the alphabet and it would sound sexy.
Sorry to hear about your leeches. Try some salt on them next time.
Wow, I'll have to try some of these out on [Wife #1], thanks.
Nothing says romance like "I Wanna Be Your Dog."
Ahem. Anyway, lovely list and Happy Valentine's Day!
Nothing compares 2 ur blog!.
Happy Valentines day, oh queen of the mix tape!
It's possible I've never seen a more perfect mix tape.
And...I'm gonna have to go with sexy boxer briefs here instead, thank you very much. ;)
Oooooh, I beg to differ Iggy and the Stooges. Now that's a sexy mix tape. I might even be inclined to add William S. Burroughs' take on REM's Star Me Kitten.
Super fabulous as always Beth. Better than a whole drawer of sexy undies!

Glad you didn't take more of my suggestions because it means there are more songs on here that I don't already have.
Shane McGowan and Sinead O'Connor did a duet? Now I never knew that - got to listen to that one, although frankly I would prefer to see a video.
Oddly, Radiohead's Let Down always makes me feel like a need a smoke, because nothing says release of sexual tension like being crushed like a bug on the ground.
Servus, Beth und Barbara!
Your wish is my command: here's the video
Happy VD!
Oh. My. God.
What a sexy, provocative mix.
Thongs, candles, wine, music, my man.
MMmmMmmmm...
'scuse me while I go have fun...
;X
Excellent, Funnypants! Thanks! I love how you can't tell if Shane still has his teeth in that video, which of course is the first thing one looks for.
You included my two mostest favorite love songs - "I Will" by the Beatles and Elvis singing "She".
You rock Beth!
But you left out Star Fucker by the Rolling Stones. Got to be room for that most romantic ballad somewhere in your list!
I'm actually more excited over the zip files than anything else, to be honest. I concur with a number of the song choices - and oddly enough I've had Nina Simone's version of "Feeling Good" going through my head last night and today. I think it's because a very nice sexy man I recently met sent me a Valentine's Day greeting yesterday...and it got me all warm and gooey on the inside. Sigh.
Hope your V-Day with your new beau was scrumdiliumptious!
Crash Into Me? I say nothing kills the mood like that damn band.
I remember when a girl I was dating loved some Bush song and she was like, "It makes me want to do dirty things," and I hated Bush more than I liked her doing those things. You've got to have some damn principles at times.
I'm totally excited by the zip files because it has been almost impossible for me to download more than a song or two from the mixes. Those databitch thieves were really working early too, because I would get online at 1:00 am your time and you would have already exceeded your amount of downloads for the day.
So anyway, thanks Beth! Its hard to get new music hear, and Pandora doesn't work, so your mixes are a huge treat for me.
Wonderful list! Thanks, and Happy V-Day.
I love being able to check in for new music every weekend!
Beautiful. It's true, all we need is love and get happy time. And not get shot at by random psychos.
Your music hath charms to soothe a savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak.
working my way through the love and happiness list. Any list that starts with the reverend Al and ends with Otis is going to be killer. Throw in the coolness of Edwyn Collins, the searing vocals of Sinead, and some heartbreaking Warren Zevon, and that my dear is entertainment. Will try to get to the "doing it list" after I rest up from this one. Happy VD to the Chits, Renae, and you Ms. Coffey
You freaky girl. Matthew Sweet, David Bowie, The National and "I Wanna Be Your Dog." You got some freak goin' on! Hope you had a good V-Day.
been listening to your B side for two days now. This is the crowning achievement of mix-tapeology. Incredible mix of sexy songs have filled my dreams with hot, nasty, and sometimes disturbing images.
ANONYMOUS BASTARD: You always do. And what are you doing scarved in anonymity?
BECKEYE: Bad Company was the soundtrack of my first high-school romance. Better than the second one (“Silly Love Songs”).
PEZDA’S GHOST: I’d love to salt those anonymous bastards. How did the tunes work out on Wife #1?
WRITE PROCRASTINATOR: I was called a freak recently, so I guess “I Wanna Be Your Dog” fits. Happy Valentine’s Day to you, dear WP.
GRANT MILLER: You flatter my page, boy. You’re the Too Cool for School with R.E.M.’s “Romance” on your Valentine’s mix.
SKYLER’S DAD: And to you, Big Daddy!
CHEZ BÉZIAT: It is damn awesome, isn’t it? I’m still listening to it — while I should be working on Friday’s mix tape.
SEAN WRAIGHT: Leave it to a cool man to save my Stooges honor. I should have used that version of “Star Me Kitten,” should I? I love how they always sneak one or two “f*cks” in the song.
SCRIVENER: I hope these put you in the mood for your next romantic evening.
BARBARA BRUEDERLIN: I stumped Barbara? Now I’m dancing with glee!
FUNNYPANTS: Thank you for the link — and welcome!
DALE: Happy heart day to my favorite Bee Boy!
DABICH: Did you have fun at my musical expense? I hope so!
BARBARA: I’d say it must be post-teeth since he’s in shadow for much of the video.
KEITH: Filegod insisted on “Wild Horses.” Bet he’s also wishing I’d included “Star F*cker.” I love that you love “I Will” and “She” — but not surprised.
MOXIE: Appears you have a story to spill in my inbox, Mizz Moxie. (BTW, New Beau surprised me and spoiled me rotten.)
PISTOLS AT DAWN: I *hate* Dave Matthews Band — maybe not *hate* — but their stuff really bores me. Except for “Crash into Me.” I cannot focus on roadways when it plays on the radio. It makes me feel all funny and tingly inside.
LULU: I upgraded MyDataBus account this week, so I’ll go back to individuals and zipped files. I don’t want you stuck listening to crap.
BUBS: Hope you and your beloved had a romantic Valentine’s Day!
ERIK DONALD FRANCE: I love this comment; I’m saving it. I hope you had a wonderfully single Valentine’s Day.
FILEGOD1: I am one entertainingly brilliant lover + happinesser, dude. (p.s. I’ll send your VD love to the Chits and Renae.)
TENACIOUS S: We freaky girls stick together, don’t we?
STICKY FINGERS: A new fan who’s one damn musical genius. Welcome, you Warholian genius. But you really need to share your “disturbing images” with the rest of the class.
Another great mix. I dig everything on here I recognize, which is quite a few. Though this year's theme for me was a bit more akin to Nick Cave's "Sweetest Embrace."
"I was called a freak recently"
I hope that person wasn't an idiot and they meant the good kind of freak, like Funkadelic, Chic and Rick James.
Great list.
