Dinner Partner Revealed!

I was vague about which blogger I met in the post below because I didn’t think to tell him I wanted to write about the evening when I got home. But he doesn’t mind, so …

I had dinner last night with Scrivener! I met Lawmom and Ella (who wore her lovely first-day dress) and Chloe!!! Yes, that’s a lot of exclamation points, but it was a rather exciting evening for me. I've long been fascinated with the Scrivener family, thanks to the wonderful tales he spins and photos he uploads on the blog. Scrivener has blogged about their drop-in dinners — they open the doors for friends looking for nourishment and conversation — and I always thought it was a cool idea. So I felt rather cool myself when I was invited.

Conversation was fascinating — politics and books and concerts, even the proper usage of that vs. which (that’s stimulating conversation in my book) — and the food was grand.

I’m going back next month.

SCRIVENER: Keeping my fingers crossed that y'all will be saying "Woohoo!" after the next dinner ...

OLD LADY: Isn't it the coolest? My world has really expanded these last six months.

The Scriveners are quite lovely (and, yes, he's handsome; love his hair!) -- Lawmom is adorable, and the girls are beautiful. They're really a great clan; they could be Hamiltons, cuz.

Beth,

Can you give me the short course on "that" and "which?"

I'm partial to which, but my spell checker always tells me to go with that.

Best,
Sark

MR. SARK: Quickly:

Use that when the phrase is necessary, such as: We need to pay the bills that are due. [In grammar terms, it's a restrictive clause.]

Use which when it can be a parenthetical phrase, when it's additional information: These bills, which are due, need to be paid. [That's a nonrestrictive clause.]

And never use that when referring to a human; always use who.

Hey Beth--guess where RC, HC and the Dutch doggie are? SGI!! Love it here too, so quiet and laid back. Have been reading books and watching movies, and walking for miles on the beach, chasing crabs (not me, the dog)

I wanna go to St. George's Island! Do I need to borrow a dog? What are you reading and watching?

a couple of guides to Italy, Elizabeth George, and various assorted movies that we never made it too at the theater. You don't HAVE to have a dog, but it helps. You can just watch other people try and keep up with theirs, and then you don't have to scoop the poop...
