Mix Tape Friday: Cup's 2007 Concert Series
This was one of the best years for live music I’ve had in years. I saw some amazing shows. I had planned to rank them from favorite-to-worst, but kept wrestling with the top five. Instead, you get to relive my musical moments via this mix tape
Looks like 2008 is going to be a great year for live music as well. R.E.M. will be on tour, and I hope to catch them two or three times. Scrivener and I are hitting the road for a couple of Wilco shows in a few weeks. I’d like to catch Springsteen when he’s here in April; I haven’t seen him in concert since maybe 1981. There’s a Magnetic Fields tour in the works, but I may need to travel to Chicago to catch a show. And the usual suspects should warble their way through town.
So, here we go: One track from each show I saw — in most cases, my favorite song performed during the show. How fitting that we kick off with Glenn Tilbrook. I didn’t post about the show, but it was one of my five favorite of the year. Glenn’s funky — I know because he told me so. You should have seen his Tom Jones number — deeee-vine!

* Thanks to the much-missed Haahnster for sending me these EC tracks.
I saw Scott McCaughey, Jeff Tweedy, Pete Yorn, and Neko Case twice — Scott as a (damn good) opening act for the solo Tweedy show and backing Robyn Hitchcock as a member of The Venus 3 … Tweedy solo and with Wilco … Pete Yorn’s own show and opening for Crowded House … Neko opening for Rufus Wainwright, then with New Pornographers.
Find the Buck: Which band included here boasts Peter Buck as a member?
There were several almost-saws this concert season — but, alas, job commitments and other issues kept me off the floor for The Detroit Cobras … another Decemberists show … Bishop Allen … The Hold Steady … Rilo Kiley … and some other kickin’-my-ass-for-missing-its. Hopefully I’ll get my priorities straight in the coming year.
Okay, so who’s joining me on the dance floor in ’08?

Happy New Year dear one! Sorry I've been MIA for a while now. But I'll be back, bitchy as ever! :)
Thanks for posting these little live gems! I only went to a handful of live shows this year but, the Tweedy show at the Tabrnacle was incredible!
Are you going to see Band of Horses tonight? I'm SO jealous! Thanks for the tunes, I'm at work so I'm gonna grab all these tunes first thing in the am! Hope your Christmas was a delight and everyone's healthy now.
What a fabulous year you have had for concerts! And how lovely of you to share the experience with us, jealous as I am.
Quite a year indeed. If I didn't hate going outside so much, I'd be more jealous.
Sounds like a stellar year from a sonic standpoint. Sorry about all the esses there.
Pete's one of the Venus 3, isn't he? Unless he was sitting in with Scott McOi but that was a solo show wasn't it?
What? No Mp3 from Silverchair?
Just wondering what you use to record these? Are most venues cool with bringing in equipment, or do you have to kind of sneak it in?
You had me at Glenn Tilbrook. Obviously.
I'm hoping he hits the road again this year. Maybe we should arrange to see him together and then we can slug it out for his affections once and for all.
COASTER PUNCHMAN: Happy New Year to you, too! I eagerly await your bitches.
TYRUS: Wasn’t the Tweedy show fab???
BLUEZ: All four Band of Horses shows sold out! We couldn’t get tix in time … dammit.
BARBARA BRUEDERLIN: It was a fun year, that’s for sure.
PISTOLS AT DAWN: I thought it was more that you weren’t allowed by law to go out …
DALE: I love alliteration … so allit away.
KS: You are correct; he played at Robyn’s show! Scott used a couple of locals when he opened for Tweedy.
SCRIVENER: Shock and surprise, I don’t own a Silverchair MP3!
BLOWING SHIT UP WITH GAS: I don’t record. Most of these are studio tracks. My dear e-friend Haahnster found the Costello tracks for me.
BECKEYE: I hear rumors that Squeeze will be touring. Let’s definitely plan a meet-up for a Glenn standoff!
