Furry Happy Monsters
The folks over at AOL Music (forget Blender or Pitchfork; they’re the bastions of cool and cutting edge on the music scene) recently put together a list of the wussiest songs. Which song ranked number one? “Shiny Happy People.” Kind of have to agree with them (although I like the remixes). R.E.M. even hates the song; they refuse to play it live or include it on greatest hits package (you gotta love their integrity). I’ve heard that Michael Stipe won’t even deposit the “SHP” residuals, but instead gives those monies to charity.
The Muppets are way cooler than AOL Music, as this video shows. There's even a Kate Pierson Muppet!
Enjoy. Dance. Sing. Toss your hair and have a little fun this morning. And I have the MP3, if you must iPod it.

Oh Christ Beth. Was that part of Peter Buck's community service? And I would love for early shy and self conscious Michael to have had a glimpse of himself dancing and enunciating with Muppets. The humanity.
Watch it, Dale. No disparaging remarks about my beloveds. Mr. Buck had young daughters at this time, girls who loved "Sesame Street." And I frickin' love this version. And the dancing. And all the color. But I guess it really is the wussiest song ever ...
wow, i had no idea they hated that song.
i wonder why. was it overplayed? or was it the chorus that did it in?
i think i remember a pretty cool guitar riff at the beginning of the song.
oh wait! it must have been that horrid dance number from the video!
I almost got tossed outta a Bux laughing so hard at that vid. Got a shortcut to it so I can get a quick fix if I need it.
Want to be the big yellow muppet hanging on Peter...
Sorta like "Don't Worry, Be Happy" I do like the instrumental part of Happy, Shiney People, but I always took it as mockery like Ricky Nelson's Garden Party
Oh it looked like fun for sure Beth, I just would have been tempted to step on a muppet or two. They looked like they genuinely had fun. And I do love the R.E.M. so don't hurt me.
I've seen that one watching Sesame Street with my daughters, and it works really well with the muppets, but it is the one song by R.E.M. that I don't like too.
Thinking of the many "singer/songwriter" type of "wuss" songs from the '70s reminds me of a joke Denis Leary used to do in his stand-up routine.
Denis talked bout the lawsuits that were being placed against heavy metal bands, with the plaintiffs blaming heavy metal for all of their children's misdeeds. Then, he said, "I wonder if this means I can sue Dan Fogelberg and James Taylor for turning me into a p*ssy in the '70s."
Sure, "Stand" edged right up to a line that "Shiny Happy People" then stepped WAY over. But, that mid-'70s stuff was "wussier" by far. Or, how about Air Supply (pick any song) from the early '80s?
Dammit. I just read a much more succinct recap of the Leary thing under #6 "Longer" by Dan Fogelberg. No way I'm erasing this, though. TOO MUCH typing effort went into it!!!
I've never seen this, but I gotta say, it's a feel-good video. Admittedly not my favorite REM song, but "Hey, we can be happy!" heh. :)
b.s.
As a seasoned watcher of the "Street", this one always brings a smile to my face. Other classics to keep your eyes peeled for, Elmo and The Goo Goo Dolls. There is also a classic with DeNiro teaching Elmo about acting that is priceless.
