Happy Birthday, USA!

Forget all the Scooter Libby crap for one day. Instead, cross that Peachtree finish line. Feast on hotdogs and 'cue and cold beer. Ooooh and ahhh over fireworks. Wave some tiny flags. Enjoy the day with family and friends. Remember what makes this country good.

And take a couple of minutes to listen to Marvin.

I'm taking your advice and ignoring politics for a day to enjoy all the stuff that makes this country great. Have a good one, Beth!

Happy I.D. to you and yours, too!

Be sure to declare your independence from something today. I have been doing this for years now. Stay tuned for a blog post on this topic...

That's my all-time favorite rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Check out the video when you get a chance.

I just saw this flag at the national Gallery last week. Or a very similar one; he made a lot of flags.

Beth, I also chose to take a moment yesterday, while sitting on my porch with an ice cold beer, to remember all of the things that make this nation great. Although we have lunatics at the wheel right now, I'm looking forward to when we pull over and change drivers. We are still a nation with many freedoms and cultures and opportunities. Even though we feel pressured right now, all is not lost and we need to remember what is good.

I love it that the first two comments are from Canadians!

BARBARA: It was a wonderful day: a drive through the North Georgia mountains, then the evening on my deck, watching my town's fireworks display.

TANYA: It was a great day; thanks!

CHELENE: I am. I'm spending the afternoon cocktailing, watching movies, and dining with my Beloved Ex.

CHRIS: It helped to forget about Scooter & Co. for a day, didn't it?

MOXIE: Ooooh! I can't wait to read that post!!!

BLOG PORTLAND: I started to upload the video ... but I can't get videos at work, dammit, so I went for the simple MP3 for similarly work-challenged kids. THANKS for the link!!!

MOUNTJOY: I love that movie! I get the chills every time Bill Pullman says "THIS is our Independence Day."

LULU: I think I uploaded the MoMA version. Isn't the National Gallery fabulous? I could live in the East Wing.

DAN: Do countries exhibit horoscopic traits? That's a bit scary ...

TENACIOUS S: At least we live in a country where we have the opportunity to make a political change. I hope folks don't forget this come November 2008.

Hey Beth - Have to comment on your comment to Dan. Yes, countries do have an astrological chart that's based on when they were founded. Astrologers can construct charts for pretty much everything. Studying charts of countries, cities, and events is called mundane astrology (funny name, eh?).

And thanks for your comments on my post - I was very touched. You rock my blog world. And you may absolutely steal the idea next year!

MOXIE: Isn't it great that we can connect with other fabulous, smart, like-us babes via the blogosphere? And I'm already working on what to get all independent on for 7.04.08.

JEWGIRL: It was fab forgetting about that Scuntface and his nasty pals.
