Mix Tape Friday

I’ve loved mix tapes since college — making them, getting them, marveling over their brilliance. I still listen to several mix tapes Simeon made for me; he’s a brilliant mix-tapologist. I closed the cover of Love Is a Mix Tape MT-inspired once again. This time, though, I‘m not using TDKs, but my blog page. Click and groove, my friends. And check in every Friday for another mix tape special.

Nice mix. They may not be your thing, but I'd also recommend "Summertime Rolls" by Jane's Addiction. It rawks.

No "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama? Beth, you disappoint me.

Whew, I need a wine spritzer, lots of ice, just looking at that list! Isn't it funny how the Twilight Singers can take a song like Summertime and turn it into a winter song?

    Nice mix tape!

I agree with dj cayenne that "Summertime Rolls" is a great song, but hey, there are oodles of fantastic summer songs, and many, many mix tapes to be made.

I was just thinking about the importance of mix tapes in my own life, prolly will post about it some point.

    Thanks for the tunage.

Awesome mix; I especially enjoyed the DCFC track. I will, however, be adding some Fresh Prince to this bad boy.

DJ CAYENNE: I don't think I have that Jane's Addiction tune; I'll get it from the ex this weekend.

KFLUFF: Banarama made it to the semi-finals, but I decided to go mellow and indie, with a bit of R&B. Next time they're in ... because I chair-danced a lot listening to those girls.

BARBARA: That's why I picked Twilight Singers to close it out. I have tons of "Summertime" covers — from R.E.M. and Peter Gabrial, to Janis Joplin and Stereophonics, and so on — but Greg Dulli gave the tune a different feel.

SPLOTCHY: I have something like 73 MP3s with "Summer" in the title. It took two days to get it down to twenty ... and I still feel bad for cutting Moonbabies.

BLOG PORTLAND: Fresh Prince also made it to the semi-finals, but it just didn't work well with this mix. Let me know what you put on your mix tape!

Great summertime playlist. Ah, mixtapes. Our girls are awed by the fact that we used to make tapes by sitting with stacks of records, obsessively lifting the needle up and down...

    Ah Christ, I'm a dinosaur.

Beth, you're SO SWEET to do this. I just noticed now that these are all links to MP3s. Cool! Thanks!!

Great list! So electic. You know you're very ecletic? I like that word. It's fun to say and type.

That would make a great mix tape. I love mix tapes like no one else.

Oooooooooooooh I love mixed tapes! I love making them. CDs just aren't quite the same, but they will do ;O) That's a great Summer Mix!

It just occurred to me that I misspelled the word TWICE!!

    Eclectic. Eclectic. Eclectic.

    There! :) Now I'm ahead 3-2.

BUBS: CDs made it easier to put together a mix tape, but I liked being in control of dropping the needle. It was pure bliss when you could fade from one song to another, with nary a hiss o' dead air.

DAN: You'll have to let me know which tracks you like. I'm eclectic ... and I work for an electric utility. How lovely is that for someone who loves words as much as I?

GRANT MILLER: Then you're gonna love me every Friday. That Pavement track's for you, BTW.

MELLOWLEE: Enjoy, lovely Mel! Let me know what I should have added.

DAN: As an obsessive editor, I'm thrilled that you came back to repair that misspell.

Thanks so much for the great list, Beth!

When I attempted to play the first one, I got a message that iTunes is missing from my computer. What, did it get up and walk away?

Anyway, I'm going right now to download it again and start listening to the summertime playlist. Thanks again!

Do the B-52's have a bad song? Man, I love them. Good mix, Beth.

ZED: Maybe your iTunes went looking for an iPhone? Download and play away!

BLUE BLANKET: MyDataBus.com. Dale (from Passion of the) turned me on to it. You can upload files, then get the code to put on your site. I'm addicted, so you'll see lots o' links on this page in the coming weeks.

CHELENE: No, dammit, they do not. I've love my B-52's since 1979, and they have yet to bore me.

LULU: That's the idea: Share the wealth.

JEWGIRL: I spent two days putting this one together, and I'm already at work on the next three. I am Nerd, hear me roar.

    Me lovey mix tapes, too.

For some reason, it never seems like summer to me until I hear Y&T's "Summertime Girls." I know that's cheesy, but that's just how I roll.

I love mixed tapes too. I just received one the other day in fact, its owning my stereo at the moment, but this is a pretty fine tracklist you have here! I shall return.

    Beth, nice tracklist!
I might add a touch of fire, as in The Fiery Furnaces with "Here Comes the Summer." I just posted a longish post of their show from Raleigh tonight. You are in for a treat tomorrow, err later today!

I need to pick up that book... I think I'm a place where I could devour that kind of memoir.

    cheers,

Don Henley ~ Boys of Summer? "I can see you, you brown skin shining in the sun. You got your hair slicked back and those Wayfarers on, Ba-by!"

It was the inflection on the word baby that did it for me... The song I listened to as a kid who had just got his drivers licence, with every window in the car rolled down, which was a close to feeling like I was in a convertible as I was gonna get...

BECKEYE: Maybe I'm a square, but I'd never heard of Y&T until I checked YouTube. I was into new wave during the hair-band craze, so I missed that beauty.

ALLISON: What's on your new mix tape?

BIG SHOULDERS: You'll love the book; can't wait to hear what you think. We didn't make it to Fiery Furnaces; got too tipsy at the early Swimming Pool Qs show. Feel free to mock me.

MOUNTJOY: Mr. Henley's summer classic got knocked out during the second round; it didn't quite fit with the vibe I went with. But now I can't quit singing it.

SEAN WRAIGHT: Welcome! I loved your summer mix tape, too!

Thanks! Best idea ever! Ask Lulu, I was a mix tape addict. I only have a few that I mixed in our production studio at the station, which were much easier with two turntables and a bunch of faders. The rest were OCD masterpieces. Wow, I sure had more time then.

DJ CAYENNE: No, sir, I haven't listened yet. *hangs head in shame* I haven't tracked down an MP3 yet ...

TENACIOUS S: I have no doubt you were as OCD about mix tapes as I was. I hope we appreciated all that free time back then.

ARTFUL DODGER: You're the inspiration, doll. You got me thinking about mix tapes, thanks to MTG, and your Love Is a Mix Tape recommendation sealed the deal.
