Six Degrees of the GMMP

Now that Splotchy has resurrected the Green Monkey Music Project, he’s offered the GMMP masters the opportunity to helm our own mix. I’ve missed my weekly mix tapes (but still can’t find the time to put them together), so I’m grabbing this opportunity to semi-mix.

The theme: Six Degrees of Music

The idea: As with Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, you need to connect six degrees of musicians or songs. For example:

    • The Box Tops: “The Letter” (Alex Chilton, lead singer)
    • Big Star: “Kizza Me” (Alex Chilton, lead singer)
    • Alex Chilton: “Make a Little Love”
    • The Replacements: “Alex Chilton”
    • The Replacements: “I Will Dare” (Peter Buck, guitar)
    • R.E.M.: “Jesus Christ”
Your sixth-degree connections can be by musicians, or cover tunes, or whatever musical notes you come up with.

We need six people to monkey around with Splotchy and me. Are you up for the challenge? Leave a comment here, and start connecting your musical dots.

I want in.
This is cool and goofy. And, I'm sure, a treat.

This is cool as hell, but I'm way to dense to play this.

I can't wait to see the results, though.

That Alex Chilton, he sure does get around.

That's one fun meme, I'll play if there's still room!

Waaaay too complicated for me, but I can't wait to learn what people come up with.

It wasn't easy coming up with my tracks. I did a lot of hemming and hawing, and I don't even really know what hemming and hawing entails.

I could spend another couple weeks thinking of the perfectly-linked six tracks, but I'm happy enough with what I have come up with.

Alright, here are the tracks:

March from A Clockwork Orange (Ninth Symphony, Fourth Movement, Abridged) - Wendy Carlos
Walter Carlos - Momus
Movies In My Head - The 6ths
Stockholm Syndrome - Yo La Tengo
No Train To Stockholm - Lee Hazlewood
These Boots Are Made For Walkin' - Nancy Sinatra

Here's my contribution:
1) Nick Lowe-American Squirm
2) Elvis Costello-What's so Funny About Peace Love and Understanding?
3) The Pogues-Man You Don't Meet Everyday
4) Kirsty MacColl-Don't Come All Cowboy With Me Sunny Jim
5)The Talking Heads-Life During Wartime
6) Shonen Knife-Banana Chips

I'll explain how they are all connected on my blog when you cats put the mix online.

Were the six people already chosen? I didn't see any info on that.

Allen L, just from reading the comments, it appears to me that all six slots have been filled.

I don't think anyone that has indicated they wanted to join the mix will be left out (which means you're in).

dr mvm, I think it's a really cool aspect of this mix that we don't show the linkage until we post about our selections. I'm excited!

figured it was either birds or cars...

Birds in Perspex - Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians
And Your Bird Can Sing - The Beatles
Pretty Persuasion - R.E.M.
Little Black Egg (The Nightcrawlers) - Minus 5's cover
Working Class Hero (John Lennon) - Tin Machine's cover
The Authority Box - Robyn Hitchcock and The Venus 3

Or a Hitchcock sandwich.
